ZARLINO's Canticum Canticorum

Motets on the Song of Songs from the 1549 Musici moduli liber primus by Venetian composer and theorist, Gioseffo Zarlino (1517-1590) in specially prepared editions by Cristle Collins Judd.

"This cycle was an extraordinary undertaking in the 1540s, drawing together both theological and musical preoccupations of that decade. It reflects the aesthetic priorities of the Cassinese Congregation of Benedictines - their churches had polished white interiors, clear windows, and a choir placed under the central dome. Zarlino's setting suggests a musical analogy of motets intended for academic devotion that attempt a large-scale affective reading of the Song of Songs through the prism of Cassinese theology." - Cristle Collins Judd

"The singers of the Plus Ultra  ensemble give pristine, beautifully blended readings."- Sunday Times (3  April 2005)

"This is a very fine recording. We have here superlative stylish performances. The  extensive and excellent notes by Michael Noone begin with a succinct biography of Morales. The presence of the facsimiles is one more sign  of the care that has gone into this excellent and highly  recommended project."           - Early Music Review  (April 2005)

" ...  breathtakingly beautiful ... you couldn't ask for cleaner, clearer performances..." - BBC Radio 3, CD Reviews (2 April 2005)

Fernando de las Infantas - MOTETES
Musica de Andalucia - CD DS-0140 (2005)

“Michael Noone continues his exploration of lesser-known but no less important Spanish composers with these thirteen motets by the nobleman Infantas, a slightly older contemporary of Victoria. Best known for his intervention, backed by Philip II, against the proposed reform of plainchant by Palestrina and Zoilo, he comes across from these motets, taken from three books published in Venice in 1578-9, as a consummate composer producing his own synthesis of peninsular and Franco-Flemish influences. The two final tracks are superbly sonorous pieces for 7 and 8 voices, the latter a highly symbolic and complex setting of Loquebantur variis linguis. Noone represents an ideal balance between researcher and interpreter, allowing his British singers to revel in Infantas' long lines and sonorities. The choral sound is beautifully blended ...and this will be an essential acquisition for anyone with an interest in Iberian polyphony”
