Felipe y Juana, 1506
Anniversaries
A series of anniversaries of events with musical significance c.1506-07 link the programme with cities and institutions in England, Spain and the Netherlands that may be interested in celebrating the connection.
January 1506:
Unscheduled visit of the ill-fated Philip the Fair and his wife Juana to England, blown off course from their mission to claim the Castillian throne from the recently deceased Queen Isabella. Philip’s ship landed at Melcome Regis and the Chapel came ashore in Falmouth. Philip was received by Henry VII and the young Prince Henry at Windsor.
February to September 1506:
The progress of Philip and Juana through Castille via Coruña, Valladolid and Segovia to Burgos.
September 25 1506:
Philip dies suddenly in the Casa del Cordón, Burgos.
2007
This will be the 500th anniverary of Philip’s state funeral in Mechelen.
Programme
As Philip’s Burgundian Chapel was probably the first choir to make regular use of wind instruments we plan to include Pierre de la Rue’s Missa pro defunctis in the programme. It could also include the performance with instruments of Josquin / de la Rue’s motet Absalon fili mi, and Ockeghem’s motet Intemerata Dei mater. Contemporary English and Spanish works could also be programmed.
